Bathroom Safety & Aids for Elderly Parents

Reduced mobility, poor balance and slippery surfaces can make familiar bathroom routines difficult. Start with how your parent gets in, sits down, washes and gets out again.

Walk through an ordinary bathroom visit

Look at the route to the toilet, the doorway and the available space. Where does your parent put their walking aid? Is there room for someone to assist? Can toiletries and a towel be reached without twisting or stretching?

A daytime walk-through may miss the problems at night. Check the lighting and clear the route from the bedroom too.

Support for sitting and standing

A raised toilet seat changes the sitting height. A toilet frame or professionally fitted grab rail offers a different kind of support. They are not interchangeable.

Check compatibility and stability, and ask an occupational therapist for advice when getting on or off the toilet is difficult.

A seated option for washing

Shower chairs and stools allow washing while seated, but the right setup depends on the person and the shower. A seat needs to fit on the floor and leave enough room for safe movement.

Measure the shower’s usable floor area, check the weight limit and consider whether a backrest or armrests are needed. A product photograph cannot confirm a safe fit in your bathroom.

The simple changes still count

Keep floors dry and reduce clutter. Use appropriate non-slip surfaces and secure fittings. A towel rail should not be treated as a weight-bearing grab rail.

Where the toilet is too far away, ask the care team whether a commode or another arrangement is appropriate. Read our bathroom walk-through guide before putting together a shopping list.

Questions families ask

Can I fit grab rails anywhere?

No. The fixing surface, rail position and installation need to suit the person and the building. Get appropriate assessment and installation advice.

Is a bathroom aid enough to prevent a fall?

No product guarantees this. Lighting, footwear, balance, medication and how the person moves can all matter. Discuss falls or a change in mobility with the healthcare team.
