Think about what is being used to clean the skin, how it is dried and whether clothing or bedding stays damp. Check product labels and known sensitivities.
Persistent redness, soreness, broken skin or a new pressure mark needs assessment. A shopping list should never delay professional advice.
What is barrier care?
Barrier products are intended to provide a protective layer on the skin when used as directed. Creams and films differ in their ingredients and application instructions.
Ask a pharmacist or nurse about a suitable formulation and how it works with the person’s continence products. Use the amount directed on the label.
Wipes and moisturisers have different jobs
A wipe can help with cleaning. A moisturiser and a barrier cream are not automatically interchangeable. Check what each product is intended for, rather than adding several layers simply because they are available.

When someone spends more time in bed
Limited movement can mean that skin needs closer attention. Ask the care team to explain pressure-area checks, positioning and any specialist equipment required.
Read caring for someone mostly bedbound for questions to bring to that conversation. Barrier cream does not replace a pressure-care plan.
